Blue Ridge Learning Centers

Science Programs

To increase students' awareness of their connect with and impact on Earth's ecology, and help them understand their responsibilities.

Participants will explore one of our local property streams. They will collect and test water samples and observe the life systems of this environment. The class will then discuss the greater concept of the earth's water system and our relationship to and responsibility for maintaining it.

Forest Ecosystems

Students will study the characteristics and diversity of forest ecosystems. Participants will hike through deciduous and hardwood forests for a firsthand look at this environment. Activities will include tree identification, soil sampling and the study of environmental effects (acid rain) on the earth's forests. Students will gain a personal perspective on how their actions affect this ecosystem.

Wildlife Ecology

Learn about the animal population that is characteristic of our mountain environment. Students will explore these animals through tracking exercises and observation. The study of the food chain will occur through assimilation activities resulting in a greater understanding of the life cycle.

Mountain Ecology

Take an earth walk with one of our leaders. Experience some of the marvels and mysteries of nature. Participants will explore the world using a variety of activities designed to enhance the learner's understanding of our diverse mountain ecosystem. The group will hike one of our many Valle Crucis trails and begin to understand the interrelationship of all living things.

Acclimatization Activities

These activities help participants to familiarize themselves with the environment and their natural surroundings. Various guided exercises allow students to experience the perspectives of animals, plants, insects and other living things in the natural world. These activities often take place within the context of the above listed environmental education courses.
